I want me a dog

Growing up I always wanted a dog and my mom and dad always refused it until my younger siblings asked for one. In January 2003 we got our first dog, a mixed terrier. She is super cute! Unfortunately, our dog is pretty feisty and really dislikes visitors. We've trained her to be more accepting and has learned, but she gets pretty antsy when people come to the house.

Then when David and I got married I began begging him for a dog as well. He refused it saying we didn't have room for one, which was true, so I asked if we could buy a chihuahua and that was denied in a heartbeat. David hates chihuahuas he says they're not children friendly since they find them as threats or competition. He told me stories about his older brother whose dog would steal all the pacifiers from the baby. He was pretty convincing.

My dream dog has always been a husky but after researching about this breed we realized that it really isn't a family dog because it was usually a dog that was bred to work. Sadly, we'll never get one unless we moved to a house that had a lot of land.

A few weeks ago we purchased the nursery dresser from a seller on Craigslist and when we went to pick it up we were greeted by a great Dane. She was huge and it scared me at first, but after talking with the mother of the house she convinced me that Great Danes are the most gentle dogs. Ever since then I've done research on this dog and I have set my mind on it.

Great Danes are sometimes called Gentle Giants. They are known to protect the family and be pretty loyal and loving. If trained properly, they can be very obedient and "proper." I'm sold on this dog! Downfall: a pure breed costs over $1800. Incredible! I'm not sure that we're going to buy one anytime soon but when we decide to buy a dog it'll more likely be this one. Aren't they gorgeous?!?

P.S. the only other dog I would consider buying other than this one would be a beagle. I just love their mellow personalities.

So cute!! We got our dog right after we were married, and he's a shizu-poodle and the best dog - so calm, obedient, and fun. He was expensive, but worth every cent, as he has brought us so much joy over the past 4.5 years. He's also amazing with babies/children, even when they're pulling his fur (oh, he's hypoallergenic). I'm not trying to sell you on this breed, just informing you that it's a very good one. :) You'll be happy with whatever breed you decide on - (properly trained) dogs are the best!

We have friends with triplets (9 or 10 years old now). They have 2 Great Danes, and they really are good family dogs. And they are beautiful!

When we were shopping for supplies for Molly (our Boston Terrier), we saw an obedience class at their "final exam" at Petco. One of the students was a Great Dane who looked positively goofy running the course (could barely fit through parts -- looked like the GD in The Ugly Dachsund!). But the funniest part was after the run seeing this GD on his hind legs with front paws on his "mom's" shoulders as she stroked his ears and soothed him. It was clear they'd done this before. Really big, but really cute.

(As for a kid friendly dog: Our Maggie (black lab) was the gentlest I've ever seen around kids -- very content to be a pillow when the kids watched TV, or to use one of them as a pillow...)
